Most of us accept that change is hard. It’s hard to change an organizational culture that has been set in place for decades. It’s hard to make changes to be more productive at work when old patterns are more comfortable. It’s hard for long-time employees to change when things have always been done a certain way.

We will discuss all of these things and more in the context of The New York Times and Wall Street Journal #1 bestselling book Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip and Dan Heath.

We will provide resources and facilitate a roundtable discussion on effecting positive change in the workplace. We will discuss ways to overcome emotional responses to change for the good and the growth of the firm.

Don’t miss this opportunity for professional growth and development as part of the SMPS-TC book club! Cost includes a light lunch. We’ll start with networking, then have a roundtable discussion while we eat.

About the Book

Switch asks the question: Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, our communities, and our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that’s built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick.

Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems—the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort—but if it is overcome, change can come quickly.

In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people—employees and managers, parents and nurses—have united both minds and achieved dramatic results.

In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.
